Excel mac show formulas not for all cells

And if I double click on the cell the content will reappear in the cell. If I click on the cell I can see the content in the formula bar. In any spreadsheet of any size I regularly have cells with content in them show up as blank or sometimes with just a few characters showing even thought the contents fit the visible cell size.
